Henagan Reelection Completes NRTC Annual Meeting
With the unopposed election of Raymond Henagan, CEO and general manager of Rock Port Telephone, Rock Port, MO, to another term on the NRTC Board of Directors, the 2016 NRTC Annual Meeting is complete. NRTC Partnering With Pulse Broadband to Support Rural Electric Fiber Projects
The contradictory state of rural broadband today is that while much of the country is racing toward fiber-fed gigabit services, many remote communities remain unserved or underserved. In some places, the electric cooperative has taken the lead to ensure their rural subscribers stay connected with up-to-date broadband service. ViaSat Renews Distribution Agreement with NRTC
January 5, 2012 – Carlsbad, Calif. – ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) has entered into a new five-year wholesale distribution agreement with the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC) for next-generation satellite broadband service through the new ViaSat-1 satellite. Similar to retail offerings, the agreement will allow NRTC members to experience the new 12 Mbps service packages. Outside ViaSat-1 coverage areas, NRTC will introduce enhanced 5 Mbps service through a new network of next-generation gateways and consumer terminals. “NRTC’s electric and telephone members were the first distributors of WildBlue service, and they remain committed to ensuring that rural Americans have access to robust broadband,” said Tim Bryan, NRTC CEO.  “The enhanced satellite broadband service will make significant contributions to the communities we serve, so we are very happy to continue our relationship with ViaSat and offer the new service.”

FCC Releases National Broadband Plan
March 16, 2010--The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released “Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan” (NBP), a blueprint for expanding and upgrading broadband service throughout the United States.  Among the things the FCC hopes to accomplish within 10 years:
• Affordable 100 megabit-per-second downstream service to at least 100 million homes;
• 1 Gigabit-per-second data feeds to schools, hospitals, and government buildings nationwide;
• Access to the fastest-available mobile broadband service for all Americans; a dedicated nationwide wireless public safety network; technical capability in every U.S. home for consumers to track their usage and manage their electric power consumption in real time.

Bob Phillips to Retire as CEO of NRTC
February 17, 2010 [Herndon, VA]—Bob Phillips, President and Chief Executive Officer ofthe National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), will retire at the end of May 2010, after 32 years of service to the rural utility program and 23 at the helm of NRTC. NRTC Member Brings Wind Farm Online
NRTC member Basin Electric Power Cooperative brought a major wind farm online on Dec. 30, 2009, near Minot, ND. The 77-turbine wind project is the country’s largest wind farm wholly owned by an electric cooperative. By the end of 2010, the wind farm will generate about 600 megawatts of electricity—enough to meet the annual electricity needs of about 175,000 homes. Basic Electric is a generation and transmission electric cooperative responsible for delivering power to distribution electric cooperatives in nine states.
