Rural Electric Infrastructure Loans Include $7 Million for Smart Grid

The Agriculture Department today announced the electric cooperatives it has selected to  receive a total of $485.5 million in loans through its Electric Loan Program. Out of that total, $7.1 million is earmarked for various smart grid projects. Eight out of 10 cooperatives on the list of awardees are NRTC members:

Mankato, MN


Central Electric Power Cooperative

Sedalia, MO


Cooperative Energy

Hattiesburg, MS


Albemarle Electric Membership Corp,

Hertford, NC


Northern Electric Cooperative Inc.

Bath, SD


Heart of Texas Electric Cooperative Inc.

McGregor, TX


Dairyland Power Cooperative

La Crosse, WI



Among the co-ops investing in smart grid systems are BENCO Electric, with “$2.7 million in technologies to increase electric system efficiencies and grid security,” USDA said. Heart of Texas is applying $1.23 of its loan to smart grid systems and Little Ocmulgee Electric is investing $357,000. The $351,000 Northern Electric is investing in smart grid will go toward projects in both North and South Dakota, USDA said.
