People's Electric in Oklahoma remembers when life was simple – at least in terms communications. Their 900 MHz radio system met all their internal utility data and communications needs and only required one tower. But, as technology evolved and needs changed, People's wanted a way to consolidate systems, incorporate new technologies like load control, distribution automation and substation security and gain higher bandwidth for more robust – and faster – data transfer.
They reached out to several vendors as well as NRTC, who they viewed as the “communications arm of co-ops”. We designed an enhanced system, including three redundant rings, that maximized their communications capabilities.
But it was in implementation, where NRTC’s value really stood out. We were with People's every step of the way – from detailing all the pieces and parts (including 29 towers) that would be needed to being on site to manage contractors and make sure everything was done right. Even the details of our quote, invoices and supporting spreadsheets enabled People's to track – and match – every dollar.
Recently, tornadoes went through People's service areas and one of NRTC’s local contractors contacted them to make sure everything was still operating. The communications system never went down, they reported.
