Strategies for Detecting and Responding to a Cybersecurity Incident or Attack

In the digital age, all businesses can expect an attack at some point and proactive detection will reduce the damage. The latest installment of our series of Cybersecurity Awareness Month articles from SilverSky’s Tom Neclerio describes network monitoring, user behavior analytics and other tools for incident detection. It also describes steps to take after detection, keying off the incident response plan, which every business should have in place.

FCC Hopes to Kick-start Sat/Cell Connections

The FCC hopes that setting a regulatory framework for future satellite/cellular communications will prompt innovation and a variety of new services carried seamlessly over multiple networks. It unanimously adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking aimed at flexible rules and rapid authorizations. Earlier this week, SpaceX said that it will begin testing a sat/cellular service over its second-generation Starlink satellites, as it announced last summer with T-Mobile.

Senators Ask FCC to Step on the Gas for Connected Cars

Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) wrote FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel to urge rapid review of requests to use 5.9 GHz spectrum to deploy Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology. In 2020, Commission designated the band for higher-powered unlicensed wireless uses, including last-mile rural broadband connections. However, it also said it would consider waivers to allow C-V2X operation, which uses vehicle-to-vehicle communications, potentially reducing highway collisions dramatically. To date, the FCC has received 18 private, state and municipal requests for waivers, but has not yet approved any of them.

Undersea Cable Project Enables Affordable FTTH for Alaskan Island

High Angle View Of Townscape By River Against Sky

Ketchikan is an Alaskan city of about 8,200 people located on an island 700 miles south of Anchorage and 700 miles north of Seattle. No bridge connects it to the shore, making it a remote spot to build a broadband network. But the island’s telephone company, KPU Telecommunications (KPUT), has a fiber network reaching every resident. Following the recent completion of a $12 million undersea cable project, service up to 1 Gbps symmetrical is as high-quality and affordable as any location in the lower 48.
